Revving their way through the male dominated Palestinian streetcar-racing scene, the Speed Sisters have been heralded as the Middle East’s first all-women racing team. Independent, determined and always on the move, they have deftly charted their own course through the pressures of social expectations, family dynamics, community politics and an ongoing military occupation.
The thrill of acceleration has provided a glimpse of what may be possible for their future in a rapidly changing Middle East. The team now stands poised to break onto the international arena and to represent an inspiring image of Palestine and of Arab women.
Mona, a veteran Speed Sister says. “When I drive, I understand freedom. As racers we get a taste of normality. We are used to being stopped at checkpoints, but on days we have races, we fly through them. One day, a woman from Palestine will win an international Formula race.”
Our documentary will follow these women in their quest to determine their own future in a year set to be a turning point for the region, for the team and in each of their lives.
The film is currently in production. We are looking for supporters and partners to enable us to complete the film.
